How often should you wash your bedding?

There’s a sheet washing frequency most experts agree on

When it comes to bed linen, one of the most frequently asked questions is, “How often should I wash my sheets?” For good sleep hygiene, it’s important to make sure they’re fresh and clean for our exhausted bodies to relax in after a long day.

The most common recommended timeframe is once a week, however for most people this isn’t realistic. With our busy lives, water shortages, load shedding and the desire to take better care of our planet, Sealy South Africa recommends washing your sheets every two weeks.  Of course, this time-frame can vary, depending on whether or not you shower before bed, how often you wash your pyjamas (or if you even wear pyjamas!), how much you sweat during the night and if your pet sleeps in your bed.

Along with washing your sheets every two weeks, there are other precautions you can take to make sure they’re getting a good, deep clean:

·        Wash sheets with hot water (at least 60°C) so pollen, dust mites and dead skin cells can be thoroughly removed.

·        Use a gentle detergent on your linens to help them last longer and be gentler on your skin.

·        Since we live in a water scarce country, always try to save water by filling your machine. However, if your machine is too full, your bedding won’t be washed properly. Sealy South Africa recommends that you don’t fill your machine more than three-quarters.

·        Have at least two sets of sheets and pillow slips for each bed.
